Travel information for Japan at a glance

Japan is located in East Asia in the Pacific and consists of a total of 6,852 islands.

Russia is located in the north of Japan, China in the west and North and South Korea in the west. Taiwan is located in the southwest of Japan.

Japan is the fourth largest island nation in the world and consists of several main islands: Honshu is the central island, which is home to the most famous cities such as Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima. There are also Hokkaido in the north, as well as Shikoku and Kyushu in the south.

The Japanese national territory also includes the Ryukyu Islands, whose main island is Okinawa, as well as many smaller islands.

Japan has an area of 377,835 square kilometers and is thus slightly larger than Germany. For comparison: Germany's area is approximately 357,385 square kilometers.

There are currently 126 million people in Japan. That means that about 337 people per square kilometer live in Japan. This makes Japan one of the most densely populated countries in the world.

The capital of Japan is Tokyo. With 9,467,490 inhabitants, it is the largest city in the country, in the agglomeration live here even more than a whopping 37 million people. Tokyo is the largest metropolitan area in the world.

Tokyo is not only the capital of Japan, but also the seat of the government and the Tenno - the Japanese emperor.

Japan is in the Japan Standard Time (JST), without switching to summer time. The standard difference to Germany is +8 hours.

From Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Munich you will come to Tokyo by direct flight.

From Frankfurt there are also direct flights to Nagoya and Osaka. From Frankfurt to Tokyo you fly about 11-12 hours.

The best time to travel to Japan depends on your desired destination.

On Honshu, it can get very hot and rainy in the summer, but crisp cold in the winter. The best travel time is therefore the spring and fall, when it rains less.

Okinawa, on the other hand, you can travel all year round thanks to its subtropical climate. Especially in summer, it is very popular as a destination, when the warm water temperatures invite you to swim and snorkel.

Hokkaido is best to travel between May and September, before and after it is very cold because of its northern location.

In Japan, you pay with yen. One euro is about 135 yen.

As always, to travel to Japan you need a valid passport. If you spend less than 90 days in the country, you do not need an additional visa.

On the plane, you will need to complete a form that requires a Japanese address and phone number. The address of your hotel is completely sufficient.

Also, keep in mind that you always have to carry with you in Japan as your passport. If you are found without a passport, this may result in fines.
