DKB Cash Visa credit card: conditions and application

The DKB Visa card is our first choice for a credit card without a foreign fee. We've had both of them for almost 10 years and can only say positive things about it.

Advantages of the DKB travel credit card

The DKB Cash checking account and the associated credit card are completely free. There is no annual fee .

The most important benefits of the DKB visa card are each in the first year of the contract and then from 700 euros monthly receipt . Then you can withdraw money in Germany and worldwide for free and pay without foreign service charge .

We are very satisfied with the checking account itself. Online banking is clear and simple and customer service is very good and fast. You really can not complain.

The cashback program of the DKB is really worthwhile, but surprisingly hardly known. The cashback program of the DKB gives you discounts in online shops as well as in numerous shops and restaurants throughout Germany. We get z. For example, when Vietnamese with us around the corner 10% discount on our bill, only if we show our DKB credit card. More than 10,000 stores in Germany are included in this program. It's worth it.

The borrowing rate is only 6.9% and you even get 0.2% interest on the credit on your credit card . Much more you do not get on a money market account at the moment.

When applying, you can verify your identity with Video-Ident . So you do not have to go to the post office, which is very convenient.

If you want to make your DKB account into your main account, DKB offers you a free exchange service and informs all your contract partners, from electricity providers to insurance companies and employers. So you do not have to worry about anything. Very convenient!

Disadvantages of the DKB credit card

Of course, the DKB travel credit card also has a few disadvantages.

The card is only available in conjunction with a current account , which is also completely free. If, from the second year onwards, you still want to withdraw and pay for free worldwide, you will need a cash receipt of 700 euros per month. So you have to actively use the DKB account to take advantage of the credit card.

Incidentally, the monthly cash receipt does not necessarily have to be your salary. You can also easily transfer yourself to your DKB account each month from another account.

If you transfer your checking account completely to the DKB, you should know that the DKB is a pure online bank. There are no branches and so you can not just go to the bank and deposit cash or cash a check. Only in Berlin there is a branch where you can also deposit cash.

Our conclusion

The DKB Visakarte has been the best option for every traveler for many years and we still enjoy using it.

If you are not sure yet if you want to have a cash receipt of 700 Euros per month, that's no problem. Since you get all the benefits in the first year even without regular cash, you can try the account in peace and then decide whether you want to have a regular cash flow in the future.

We use the DKB account as our main account and can highly recommend this. With VideoIdent and the free account change service, opening an account at DKB is easier than with any other bank.

Tips on the application

The online application for the DKB Cash checking account including a free credit card is quickly and easily completed.

Afterwards the DKB offers a very special service: the Video Ident procedure. You no longer have to go to the post office and go through the PostIdent process, but simply confirm your identity from home. All you need is a laptop or computer with a webcam and you can show your ID card online in just a few minutes.

How exactly this works is explained very well after the application. Of course, it is still possible to use the Postident method in the classic way, but with VideoIdent it is much easier.

Santander 1Plus Visa Card: conditions and application

The Santander 1Plus Visa Card is also a very good and easy option to withdraw money for free worldwide and to pay with no foreign service charge.

Benefits of the Santander 1Plus Visa Card

You can withdraw money for free both in Germany and in all countries worldwide . The Santander is the only credit card that refunds you the third party fees for vending machine operators . For travel to foreign countries (eg USA, Thailand, Myanmar, Mexico) the Santander 1Plus Visa Card is the best choice.

You can also pay in any currency without foreign service charge .

The credit card itself is of course completely free and costs no annual fee .

If you travel a lot by car, the Santander 1Plus Visa Card offers a special feature. You get 1% discount on your gas station bills up to a maximum of 400 euros in sales per month.

Disadvantages of the Santander 1Plus Visa Card

Every credit card has its advantages and disadvantages, including the Santander 1Plus Visa Card.

You can withdraw with the credit card a maximum of 300 euros per day . That was never a problem for us. Since the withdrawals are free of charge, we prefer to deduct small amounts anyway.

In addition, you can use the credit card to do a maximum of 10 transactions per day . That too has never been a problem for us.

The borrowing rate is 13.16% per year . This is relatively high compared to the DKB. If you settle your monthly statement on a regular basis, you may not care about the borrowing rate.

Our conclusion

The Santander 1Plus Visa Card is the perfect choice for every traveler. Since the card is free and no additional account is required, an application is not a hurdle at all.

Even if you do not use the card at the end, there are no disadvantages. To withdraw money in countries with machine fees, the Santander card is definitely the best and cheapest option.

Tips for application and use

The card is a real credit card. This means you will receive a credit card statement once a month. 5% of the monthly amount of your bill will be automatically collected by Santander from your checking account, which you provide when you submit your application. The rest of the billing you have to transfer.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to collect the full amount, so you always have to transfer manually. It's best to set a fixed date in the calendar, so that you do not forget that, because the debit interest on the Santander credit card in comparison is relatively high.

In the fourth step of your application you will be asked if you would like to take out an installment insurance. This protects you from unpredictable financial difficulties that z. For example, unemployment or disability may occur. However, this insurance costs 0.89% of the debit balance. We therefore did not complete this insurance.

After you have completed and printed out the online application, you still have to sign it. With your application and your identity card, you go to the post office and fill in a PostIdent form there. The whole thing will then be sent free of charge to Santander Bank and after about 2 to 4 weeks you will receive your new credit card.

If you want to reimburse the third-party fees of the vending machine operators abroad, it makes sense to keep the documents of the withdrawals and submit them to Santander for reimbursement.

Advanzia Master Card: Conditions and application

The Mastercard from Advanzia Bank is the third credit card on the road that we always carry. We use this credit card primarily as a backup, if somewhere no Visa card is accepted. This is rare, but it can happen.

Since the credit card is completely free, you can order it easily and has no disadvantages if you use it very rarely.

Benefits of the toll-free Advanzia Master Card

The Advanzia Toll Free Credit Card is completely free. There is no annual fee due. There is also no foreign currency charge.

If necessary, with the Master Card of Advanzia Bank, you will have a backup if no visa cards are accepted anywhere. This is rare, but not excluded.

Mastercard usually has slightly better conversion rates when you pay in foreign currency. For us, the differences have always been marginal.

A nice advantage is also a credit of 5% on car rental bookings . The bank offers its own comparison portal, in which you can compare the prices of all major car rental companies. When booking through this portal, you will receive 5% of the rent refunded.

Disadvantages of the Advanzia Master Card

The Advanzia Toll Free Credit Card charges relatively high debit interest on cash withdrawals of 22.9% from the transaction date.

So if you withdraw money with the credit card, debits are due from the first day. So you should always balance your balance directly by bank transfer, in order to pay no interest. If you do that, it's no problem. If you forget to balance the balance, it can be relatively expensive.

Incidentally, the debit interest is due immediately only for cash withdrawals. If you pay by credit card, the amount is interest free for up to 7 weeks.

Our conclusion

The credit card of Advanzia Bank is the perfect second pass for us. Since there are no fees, there are no disadvantages if you only have the card as a backup. If you use the card, you must be sure to balance the balance promptly in order not to have to pay high interest.

Tips for card application

Applying for the Advanzia credit card is quick and easy. After 2 to 3 weeks you have the credit card in the mailbox. It is particularly practical that the application does not require a PostIdent procedure.

Why a credit card when traveling?

Germany is probably the only country in the world where a credit card still has something mysterious about it. The Germans love their cash and their good old debit card, which is officially no longer debit card, but Maestro card.

Coming with a Maestro card in Europe relatively far, it is already difficult in other countries. If you have ever tried to pay for your hotel bill with the debit card in Thailand or to withdraw money in Myanmar , you will know what we mean.

When traveling, a credit card makes things much easier. The two major credit card companies Visacard and Mastercard have a huge worldwide distribution. You can use it to withdraw and pay money in almost every country.

Even if you z. For example, if you want to book flights online, you need a credit card. While German airlines can pay by direct debit, international airlines often only know one payment method: the credit card.

This is how an ATM looks like in Japan . Here, too, we have withdrawn money for free with our DKB credit card.
Our travel credit cards make traveling a lot easier.

Withdrawing money abroad: Our tips for using credit cards abroad

In some countries, when withdrawing money at the machine, you will be asked if your account should be charged in local currency or directly in Euro. In addition you will be shown a supposedly good exchange rate and you are suggested that you make a great deal if you decide for the burden in euros.

Do not do that! The conversion rates are always much worse. This can really cost a lot of money. The credit cards presented here all offer fair and up-to-date exchange rates. So if the machine asks you how your account will be charged: Always choose the local currency.

One reason why we have several credit cards with us is the issue of security. We are very careful, but it can always happen that the purse is stolen or lost. Then we have other credit cards that we can use in case of such an emergency.

Of course, this only works if you do not always carry all the credit cards with you. Therefore, you should store your replacement cards, which you do not need frequently, in a safe place in the hotel.

As well as inland, you should not lose sight of when paying with the credit card. If someone disappears into the back room with your card, that is at least suspicious. The same applies if an ATM has any equipment that you find funny. Then: finger away and look for another machine.
